Aunt Stella

Writer's picture: glenhaneyglenhaney

Alone at home, I leaned back for a little Bach and classical rock.

A rap at the door, too urgent to Ignore, broke the spell. I peeked

through the hole and with no one there went back to my chair.

The sound continuing, I observed it was coming from the bottom

Of my door! It was Aunt Stella, in a wheel chair with her peg leg

Tapping “Open the door” in Morse code. Having been an encoder

As a WAC In the war, she was tapping out a message of dots and dashes

When a bomb flew in and she lost a limb. Enduring lore persists that she

Finished her message before they could carry her to the field hospital.
